Powering the Dynamic Grid: Vision and Applications for Grid Foundation Models
Nurali Virani – GE Vernova Advanced Research
The concept of a Grid Foundation Model (Grid FM) is emerging as an enabler for next-generation energy management. This presentation offers an industry perspective on defining Grid FMs, moving beyond theoretical concepts to practical applications. We will explore key AI use cases that serve as stepping stones toward a comprehensive Grid FM, including advanced load/generation forecasting, grid operation planning under weather, generation, and load uncertainty, and the acceleration of interconnection planning. The discussion will also address the technical realities of this transition, sharing specific insights and challenges related to time-series foundation models for power systems. Finally, the presentation will articulate a vision for the “fully dynamic grid” of the future, demonstrating how Grid FMs will evolve from analytical tools into central engines for active planning, operations, and control.
